I am a journal junkie. I love notebooks, journals, and notepads of any size, shape, and color. If they have cute, snappy sayings on their covers, it’s even better!
There is a down side to being a collector of this caliber, though. Eventually, there comes a point where those precious books become used and wind up archived on a shelf. One more thing that dust can cover. (I hate dust…might be a good blog topic for the future – How Dust is a Distraction in my Daily Life. We’ll see…)
The point is, rarely do I go back through those old journals to reread everything I wrote in them.
I felt bad about this recently and grabbed a few of my former, glue-bound friends and began leafing through them. What I learned as I leafed was profound.
Many of the truths, notes, and musings tucked within their pages were repetitive. Although said in various ways, many of the points were quite alike.
That’s when the aha moment came – God is a God of repetition!
I’ve hesitated to throw away older journals thinking that somewhere buried in their contents will be a golden statement that I’ll need someday. But God put that uneasiness to rest by showing me that He is faithful and timely in His ability to remind.
2 Peter 1: 3 – 11 describes in wonderful detail the things that God has given to us for life and godliness. The need for divine promises, a thorough list of godly building blocks, and detailed instructions to make your calling sure are just a few of the things you will find in this short passage.
Then, in verse 12, Peter says, “…I will always remind you about these things…”
Being inspired by God, Peter knew that the Christ-followers he was writing this letter to would, in fact, need to be reminded of the truths he had already penned.
God, in His incredible wisdom, knows that our finite minds can only hold so much information at a time. As a result, He repeats things throughout our lives as we need to be reminded of them (or learn a lesson in a deeper way).
While I did not (and will not) grab my trash can and throw away every used journal I own, there is a freedom in knowing that God will forever be faithful to remind me of pertinent truths that I need to hear when I need to hear them.
Well, I’m off to write this inspiring revelation down in my trusty journal!
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
