We live in a world with no shortage of evil.
Listening to the latest news cycle reminds us of that, doesn’t it?
Honestly, though, we don’t even need the news because, on a personal level, we are bumping into evil all day, every day.
Ever have someone do you very wrong and seemingly look like they’re “getting away with it”? If we’re being honest, I think we all have in some form or fashion.
On the heels of such injustices, evil can slide up alongside us with a variety of very creative ideas on how to make it right.
Human nature, right?
Can I just say right here that I am so grateful that God overshadows our human frailty!
In Psalm 37, God gives us a short, but very clear truth to help us navigate this human tendency.
“Turn away from evil, do what is good…” (vs. 27 CSB)
That’s generally not what we’re inclined to do, is it?
In our brokenness, we tend to stare at evil, fixate on evil, obsess over evil.
Anything but turn away from it!
But God doesn’t stop there. He gives us direction, clarity, and something better to do instead.
“…do what is good…”
Our Father knows that our doing what is good is, ultimately, what’s best for us and those around us.
And, it leaves evil in the hands of the only One who truly can deal with it effectively.
God.
“Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead leave room for God’s wrath, because it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord…
Do not be conquered [overcome] by evil, but conquer [overcome] evil with good.” (Romans 12:19 & 21 CSB)
I pray today that if you’re struggling in this area, you would be able to surrender it to God. He’s big enough to deal with evil so we can busy ourselves instead with doing good.
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
