Not too long ago, while browsing the aisles of a local boutique, I spotted it.  A small piece of home décor.  Circular and wooden with a neatly tied white cord attached so as to hang it on a wall.  Painted on it the words, “We’re all just walking each other home.”

The words penetrated my heart and my eyes became damp as this simple message resonated with my soul.

Each of us finds ourselves on a journey as we navigate life on this earth and no one is called to walk it alone.

For those whose hope is found in Christ, we understand that earth is not our home.  All the trials, sorrows, and pain of this physical life are just passing, fleeting, and temporary.

Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “faith chapter” because it’s packed with examples of men and women who hung on tightly to a heavenly God while walking through this temporary life of challenges and hardships on earth.

“…they confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth…those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.” (Hebrews 11:13 & 14 – emphasis mine)

They knew earth was just a passing through point.  They also understood the value and necessity of helping other sojourners on the way.

“Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

For years, every time I read that verse, I would picture a couple traveler’s helping each other with their loads.  Sharing the weight of what’s in their backpacks.  Stopping when one gets winded and needs a break.

The spiritual application of this is a constant as we journey together towards eternity.  This life can be hard, tiring, and wearisome.  We need each other.  It’s more than just a suggestion; it’s a divine instruction so as to fully demonstrate the love of God.

Who do you know that is carrying a burden that you can help shoulder?  Perhaps it’s as simple as texting that person to let them know you’re praying for them today.

How can you lighten the load of that friend who is carrying the weight of a troubling medical diagnosis or a strained marriage?  Sometimes just an invitation to coffee where you offer your gift of time and a listening ear does wonders to a friend’s soul who feels alone, scared, and isolated.

Remember, we’re all just walking each other home.  Who can you help along the way today?

Until next time, Grace and Glory!
