Anyone else watch the recent Super Bowl?
There was a lot of celebrity air time, wasn’t there?
From the star-studded commercials to the continuous coverage of Taylor and friends during the game, this year’s Super Bowl was as much about popular celebrities as it was about football.
And, as millions of viewers sat there admiring Blake Lively’s perfect hair, J.Lo’s beautiful clothes, and Jennifer Aniston’s status and prestige, the temptation to covet what they have and how they look was very real.
Especially for those longing to fit in, yearning to be seen, or struggling with their identity.
Ever wonder, though, if Jesus had bought a ticket and sat there among the sea of fans how many cameras would have panned to Him?
Would anyone have sought Him out for a commercial cameo or invited Him to the middle of the field to participate in the opening coin toss?
Isaiah 53 actually gives us the answer.
“He had no…beauty to make us take notice of Him. There was nothing attractive about Him, nothing that would draw us to Him.” (vs. 2 GNT)
In other words, no.
No one would have paid much attention to Him at all because Jesus was just an average-looking guy.
Nothing about His appearance would have made you turn your head.
He would never have made it onto the cover of People Magazine because of His chiseled physique, bulging biceps, or beautiful locks.
There was nothing about this regular Man that would have captivated us.
Other than His life-changing mission and message.
“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed…” (Luke 4:18 CSB)
I don’t know about you, but for this average gal, that is exceedingly great news!
I’ll never have the looks of Taylor Swift or the appeal of Jennifer Garner, but I whole-heartedly embrace the gift of carrying Jesus’s marvelous message of hope to a generation longing for influence.
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
Just sent this devotional to a new friend of mine, to encourage him that we are like Jesus too! 🙂 Just average folks (not really) with the Spirit of God within and upon us!! 🙂
Thanks so much for your words of encouragement to me this morn!!!
SO grateful for your feedback (and opportunity to share)! Thank you, my friend! 🙂
