Dark days. We all have them.

You know the ones – when reading your Bible feels pointless; every fiber of your being feels blah; and God seems like He’s a gazillion miles away focusing on anything but you.

They’re awful, terrible, no-good days and I had one recently.

Several heavy life circumstances had collided at once creating a perfect storm for my soul.

The thought of steamrolling through a variety of chores and tasks just to distract myself until I felt better crossed my mind.

I’ve done that many times before, though, and knew the results would be shallow, superficial, and quite temporary.

Like putting a band-aid on a C-section. Completely ineffective.

Instead, I was reminded of what David modeled in the Psalms.

Wait patiently.

Not a popular option, I know, and one that our flesh tends to recoil from on every level.

But, look at what happens to the soul who’s willing to do so…

“I waited patiently for the Lord, and He turned to me and heard my cry for help.

He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.

He put a new song in my mouth…” (Psalms 40:1-3 CSB)

This isn’t a passive kind of waiting.

David placed himself in a posture of expectancy. He realized that there was no human effort on his part that would help. He was desperate for divine insight, movement, and deliverance.

Have you ever felt that way? Desperate. Stuck. Sitting in the dark.

Maybe you do today?

The same God who met David in His moments of darkness is the same God who meets and helps us today.

He sees and hears us.

He lifts us out of the darkness and rescues us from that desolate, isolated pit that wants to hold our soul hostage.

He shines His light and helps us get unstuck.

He renews our joy and restores our peace.

He brings us to that place where we can say like David did – “[He] answered me!” (Psalms 22:21 CSB)

If you feel like you’re sitting in the dark today, my friend, know that God sees you and is eager help.

Wait patiently for Him.

He will come.

Your King will lift up your head once again!

“But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts up my head.” (Psalms 3:3 CSB)

Until next time, Grace and Glory!
