A few years ago, I was working a job that I loved with all of my heart. I had developed some incredible friendships through it and I knew the job like the back of my hand.
Then, a promotion presented itself and I questioned whether I should apply.
Is this a good move?
Am I hearing God correctly?
What if I fail miserably?
As the internal, nagging questions of self-doubt continued to assail me, I sought wise counsel with those closest to me whom I trusted. I asked for their sincere insight and prayer.
Unanimously, they all assured me this was a step I should not pass up.
I applied, mainly because I valued all of their counsel and assessments not because I felt confident or competent in any way.
Today, I’m so grateful that I listened to that small group of trusted family and friends. I got the promotion and periodically still pinch myself that I get to do what I do every single day because I love it so much!
Ever felt that way? It looks like God might be calling you forward, but the comfortability of the “known” and “familiar” holds you paralyzed to the present?
It’s a human tendency that we’re all susceptible to.
Stepping into the unknown is one of the scariest things to do. It pushes us outside of our comfort zone, challenges our faith, and moves us beyond the scope of what’s familiar.
Proverbs 11:14 offers us clear wisdom when it comes to navigating the stormy waters of uncertainty. “…in the multitude of counselors, there is safety.”
Counselors – that band of people that know you well and love you enough to speak into your life in a caring, transparent, and gracious kind of way. Those folks who know your gifts and strengths but also your blind spots and Achilles heel.
Those trusted advisors, mentors, coaches, family and friends who will offer sound and sage insight when you’re standing at the crossroads of doubt and fear.
Not only do these people speak clarity into our hearts and souls, but they provide the support to take that courageous step of faith into the unfamiliar when we feel our most vulnerable.
Where is God calling you forward today, friend? It may be applying for that job, using your God-given gifts in a new way, or focusing on your health.
Whatever it is, tap into those trusted people in your life for counsel, assurance, strength, and safety.
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
