A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I was a journalist. As a feature story reporter for a small town newspaper, I developed a passion for questions. Questions were a necessary part of my job. Without them, I would not have been able to gain a clear understanding of the person’s story or ensure that I had their details accurate.
So many times in the Scriptures, God reminds me of a thorough reporter with the volume of questions He asks. The first story recorded in Genesis that contains dialogue is dotted with His questions.
After Adam and Eve had eaten the fruit, their eyes were opened and they realized they were without clothes (Genesis 3:7). They quickly jumped into a sewing project, put on their new duds, and avoided God. Once God catches up with them, their conversation begins and Adam acknowledges that he and Eve hid because they “knew they were naked”. God then asks a thought-provoking question that still applies to each of us every single day…
“Who told you that…?”
In Adam’s case, the answer explained how he wound up in his nude predicament to begin with. But, what about us? We may not be harassed by a visible talking snake, but we ALL have internal dialogue going on that’s coming from somewhere – worries, cares, fears, and anxieties assault our minds every day and we need to ask ourselves, “Who told me that?”.
“…take EVERY THOUGHT captive to obey Christ,” (2 Corinthians 10:5) That’s our instruction. Plain and simple. We should be able to ask ourselves, “Who said that?” as we hold each thought up for inspection. If our answer isn’t, “God did!” then we should promptly discard it and replace it with what God says.
If it doesn’t encourage, instruct, strengthen, or inspire, get rid of it! Even necessary course-corrections that don’t “feel good at the time” should be encouraging us to a place of unity and fellowship with God – not leaving us to feel like we’re the scourge of the earth and comparable to chewed gum stuck on a shoe sole.
God give you grace today to examine each thought, ask “Who said that?”, and be able to answer “GOD DID!” more and more!
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
Love the quote, “If it doesn’t encourage, instruct, strengthen, or inspire get rid of it!”. Great post!
