I’m sure you’ve experienced it. There you are, driving down the road, when all of a sudden something catches your eye.
Your head swivels around to look at whatever breath-taking scenery, historical landmark, or traffic accident you happen to be passing. By the time you put your attention back on the road, you realize you’ve inadvertently veered out of your lane.
Surely there’s not a driver out there who’s not done this at least once in their automotive career.
The simple truth is we steer where we stare.
As humans, we weren’t created to focus on more than one thing at a time visually. Wherever we intentionally direct our gaze is what we are absorbing at that moment. The same is true with our spiritual sight.
All sorts of things right now have got people internally rubbernecking to the left and right. Cable television and headline news alone offer a wide variety of topics to fixate on that will quickly have your faith in a ditch.
The alternative is to keep your heart and mind focused on God and His Word.
“…whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable…dwell [focus, fixate] on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
With so many voices today giving attention to what is unjust, impure, and not commendable, it behooves us to buckle up and keep our eyes sharply focused on Jesus.
Just like driving a car well requires that we keep our attention on the road, our walk with God requires that we keep our gaze fixed squarely on Him and what He says.
We steer where we stare.
What’s got your attention today, dear friend? What are you distracted with or fixated on that’s got you drifting off your spiritual road?
Don’t let the temporary issues of the moment derail you from your eternal walk and calling.
God reigns and is worthy of our complete and undivided attention. Stare at Him and you’ll be sure to steer in the right direction.
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
This is definitely true 💜, well said Kristen!!
