Ever feel out of place?  Yeah, me too.

Many times I have felt like a seagull trying to navigate my day alongside peacocks.

Allow me to explain…

I grew up along the shoreline of Lake Superior and got to watch seagulls daily – they did everything from walk up to picnickers and unabashedly beg for food to spend countless hours a day flying AGAINST the wind instead of with it!  Most of the time, they just never came across as the sharpest tools In the shed, if you know what I mean.

Peacocks, on the other hand, always seemed so beautiful, graceful, and elegant – like they had it all “put together”.  True, I didn’t grow up watching them…they probably had their shortcomings, but I never witnessed those (another topic for another blog, perhaps).

Many times in life, I’ve looked around the rooms I’m in – at work, home, church, the grocery store – and have quickly seen all the peacocks and immediately felt like an out-of-place seagull.  Thoughts like, “I don’t fit in here…They are so much more talented than I am…She can do this so much better than me” have swirled through my mind.

It’s in those moments, if I continue to entertain those negative thoughts and compare myself to those I see around me, that my identity begins to falter and my uniqueness begins to erode.

Crafted with intentional design, God says we arecreated in His image” (Genesis 1:26) and that we aremarvelously made” (Psalm 139:14).  Truth that we are no accident; mistake; or misfit.  We were ultimately made by Him, for Him, and to reflect Him!

Seagulls have their place just as much as peacocks do.  Both were created by God – with purpose and meaning.  They don’t look alike or act alike because they’re not supposed to!

The same is true for you and I.  We were created with unique skill sets, talents, personalities, quirks, and callings – with purpose and meaning.

The simple fact is that the world needs all kinds of birds AND all kinds of people!  Embracing who you are in Christ (and keeping your thoughts aligned with what He says about you) will help you soar (or walk) victoriously!

Until next time, Grace and Glory!
