My husband’s lifelong career has been in the flooring industry.

He began as a young whippersnapper fresh out of college and has spent the last four decades helping customers choose the best flooring options for their specific needs.

That said, he has a keen eye when it comes to all things flooring. It’s the first thing he notices when we walk into a restaurant, hotel, or store.

Generally speaking, no matter where we go, he can usually tell me what type of flooring it is, who manufactured it, the name of the color and style, and the best way to clean it!

I never cease to be impressed.

Clearly, Anthony’s trained eye and wealth of knowledge comes from his many years of working in this particular field.

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul gave Timothy, a young pastor, some specific instructions on how to grow in his knowledge of the Lord and in his God-given leadership and ministry.

They included things like devoting himself to the Word, not neglecting the spiritual gift that was in him, and setting a good example for others.

Paul wrapped up his encouragement by saying, “Practice and work hard on these things; be absorbed in them [completely occupied in your ministry], so that your progress will be evident to all.” (I Timothy 4:15 AMP)

Progress, growth, and learning happen over time. But, they all require our active participation.

In order to know the Scriptures well, we need to spend time in them.

In order to develop our spiritual discernment, we need to be wholly surrendered to Christ.

And, in order to grow as a child of God, we need to take time to sit with our Father.

Our growth in Jesus never happens by chance.

It’s dependent on us to do the work and gain experience as we immerse ourselves in the ways of God.

Then, progress occurs that is evident – and divinely helpful – to others. They begin to see Jesus in us. They hear His heart when we speak. They see His grace when we listen, care, or help.

Eventually, they might even come to say, “I want to know Jesus like you do. Can you help me?”

Father, help us dedicate ourselves to being students of Your Word. Help us grow in our relationship with You and be more sensitive to the leading of Your Holy Spirit in our lives today. Open our eyes so that we are keenly aware of how our gifts can be used to draw those around us into a life filled with grace and hope because of You. We will forever give You all the glory! Amen.

Until next time, Grace and Glory!
