Did you know that Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state in the country?
Both Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas are bordered by four of the five Great Lakes and it’s shorelines boast more than 150 lighthouses.
Growing up in Michigan, I remember seeing the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse in action. On the stormiest of nights, when Lake Superior’s fierce waves were crashing upon Marquette’s break walls, this lighthouse stood firm, shining its beacon brightly and guiding ships from afar to a place of safe harbor.
The ship’s captain, of course, would have the arduous task of steering towards the light as his vessel was tossed around by the angry waves opposing him on every side.
But it was up to the captain to keep his eyes on the light.
And it was the lighthouse’s job to keep shining.
Much like our walk with Jesus.
Jesus already told us in His Word that this life will have its fair share of storms (Matthew 7:24-27). But, He also reminds us that He is the Light – the One Who shines ever so brightly, no matter how dark our world appears.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1 ESV)
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5 ESV)
Our challenge is to keep our eyes on the Light.
As broken people, we’re more naturally inclined to focus on our problems; the darkness; or our storms.
But when we do, doubts about God’s goodness crash over us like angry waves. Questions about His gracious and loving character threaten to capsize us and shipwreck our faith (I Timothy 1:19).
Still, the Light stands firm. Resolute and unwavering. Continuously providing a brilliant beacon that illuminates the safe path to Himself.
Will we follow it? Will we let it guide us into the refuge of His never-ending care?
I don’t know what storm you might find yourself in today, my friend, but I pray that you would have the courage to keep your eyes on the Light.
“My help and glory are in God – granite-strength and safe-harbor-God – so trust Him absolutely…God is a safe place…” (Psalm 62:8 MSG)
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
