The rain was coming down so hard I couldn’t see more than a few inches in front of my car. My windshield wipers were exhausted just trying to keep up (I’m pretty sure I could hear them gasping for breath).

I needed to get to a meeting but this storm could’ve cared less. The pelting rain and the whipping winds were doing their best to stop me in my tracks.

And while the storm did succeed in slowing me down just a bit, it didn’t halt my progress completely.

Much like the storms of life as we navigate them with Jesus.

In Matthew 7, Jesus wrapped up His Sermon on the Mount by saying, “…everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock.” (vs. 24-25 CSB)

Storms are just part of this earthly journey. It’s never a question of if but when.

It’s a guarantee that we will encounter the pelting rain of relational conflicts, the whipping winds of financial hardships, and the turbulent gale of medical ups and downs.

Hurricanes of grief, tsunamis of regret, and tempests of fear will try to stop us in our tracks.

And while it can feel in the moment like we’re stuck in the storm, if we’re hanging on tight to Jesus, we are promised it’ll pass.

“For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long…so we don’t look at the troubles [storms] we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18 NLT)

Thanks be to God that our stability is found in Jesus and Jesus alone as we build our house (our heart, our life) on Him.

Jesus – the One Who can walk upon the water in the storm (Matthew 8:23-27); quiet the turbulent wind and waves (Mark 4:39-40); and promises to be our Refuge (Isaiah 25:4).

He is our sure Foundation; our Rock; and our ultimate place of safety and rest.

In the words of Charles Spurgeon, “I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the Rock of Ages.”

Until next time, Grace and Glory!
