Is it possible to completely surrender our finances into the hands of a sovereign God?

For Sylvie Roland, that was the question she wrestled with early in her faith journey that, ultimately, went on to underscore her incredible God story.

“I love to be in control,” Sylvie noted. “I thought it was an attribute of being independent.”

But fourteen years into her marriage, she was faced with a faith-challenge that rocked her to her core.

“My husband, Darrell, felt called into the ministry,” said Sylvie. “and our pre-teen daughter had let us know she wanted to attend a private Christian school.”

The Roland’s had just built a home and Sylvie struggled to see how their bills would be paid once Darrell resigned from his corporate role at Pepsi.

“All I could think about was where are we going to get the money for these life changes that were being thrown at me,” Sylvie noted.

Circumstances seemed to only go from bad to worse for Sylvie when she realized she was about to be unemployed, as well.

“The day Darrell resigned from Pepsi, the company I had been working for was bought out by a competitor,” Sylvie recalled. “I remember calling Darrell, begging him not to resign because I wasn’t going to have a job.”

According to Sylvie, Darrell reassured her that God would provide and gently reminded her of the adversary’s tactics.

“He told me, ‘Don’t you see what Satan is trying to do, Sylvie?’” she said.

“I knew Darrell was right,” Sylvie continued. “But, I just cried my eyes out.”

Two specific Bible verses helped anchor Sylvie’s heart during this difficult time.

“My God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) and “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich…” (Proverbs 10:22).

“Those verses repeatedly reminded me that God does take care of His children and that He will provide all of our needs,” Sylvie noted.

How did God show up for Sylvie during this season?

“Darrell took that leap of faith and went into the ministry,” she said. “Our daughter enrolled in that Christian school, and I received a three-month severance package and was immediately hired by the competitor company.”

“All God!!” Sylvie noted with joy.

For those who might find themselves in a similar struggle, Sylvie had a closing thought.

“God can and will provide abundantly more than a paycheck ever could,” she said. “We can always trust Jesus.”
