I was tired.
Tired of the spiritual warfare I found myself in. Tired of the same circumstances bubbling to the forefront of my life. Tired of bringing the same cares and burdens to the Lord.
Just tired.
I opened my Bible to read, “God prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies…” (Psalm 23:5 CSB)
Such a simple statement.
The problem was I’d been overlooking a key truth in this promise and, as a result, had become weary in fighting the good fight.
God was inviting me to His table – even in the face of opposition.
Life can be hard, can’t it?
Daily, we find ourselves navigating heartbreaks, loss, frustrations, illnesses, and the overall tests and trials of living in a broken world filled with broken people.
Overarching all of this is the spiritual warfare we find ourselves engaged in.
If we’re not careful, fatigue can set in; weariness can overtake us.
We have an enemy who is actively opposed to us on a daily basis. He is crafty, smart, cunning and will do anything in his power to fracture our faith, destroy our joy, and steal our peace.
It may be a disagreement with our spouse; an irritation with our kids; or a conflict with a coworker at the office.
God, in His wisdom and incredible care, knew that we would need a space to just sit and rest; to come – with all of our hurts, wounds, and battle scars and just be.
In the presence of our enemies.
God doesn’t promise to take the enemy away; to remove him from our environment; or to send him on his merry way once we sit down at the table.
God invites us to come and sit down at this table while our enemy is still lurking and hanging around.
Discouragement can come when we assume God will remove our enemy; change our circumstances; or fix our problem just because we’ve sat down at the table.
We need to remember our victory is at the table. When we come, sit down, and rest.
Maybe you find yourself needing this rest today? Pull up a chair and grab a seat at the table, my friend!
Isaiah 30:15 says it beautifully, “The Lord has said: You will be delivered by returning and resting; your strength will lie in quiet confidence.”
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
