A few years ago, my Mom and I were taking a drive down a road that I was very familiar with as a girl. Years had passed, though, and I’d slept many times since I was last on that road. It wasn’t quite as familiar to me anymore.
That said, I took a shortcut to get us back to the main highway.
However, because I didn’t remember the area like I once did and because some things had actually changed in the area, my shortcut tacked way more time onto our little outing.
Not only did it cost us more time, but it definitely added confusion and frustration into the mix.
Genesis tells the story of a husband and wife who tried to take a shortcut that didn’t work out too well, either.
Abram was promised an heir by God (Genesis 15:4). His wife Sarai wasn’t getting pregnant and grew antsy to see this promise fulfilled.
Devising a shortcut, Sarai presented Abram with her personal servant Hagar and told Abram, “Since the Lord has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family.” (Genesis 16:2 CSB)
Hagar conceived and had Ishmael.
But much to Sarai’s chagrin, this baby did not fulfill God’s promise for them and, as a result, Sarai was immediately consumed with anger, jealousy, and a cruel bitterness that she unleashed towards poor Hagar.
Thirteen years later, the Lord appeared to Abraham and announced that his wife Sarah would bear a son. “…you will name him Isaac.”
This was the promised heir (Genesis 17:19-21).
And while God’s promise to Abraham did come to pass, the lingering effects of Sarah’s human shortcut rippled out for years to come.
Abraham’s family was divided with tensions and strife that were irreparable. All because of a shortcut.
We all have the propensity to be as gullible as Abraham or as foolish as Sarah.
We tend to want our answers and guidance from God to be immediately given in such a way that is foolproof to follow. When those answers don’t come quickly, we’re tempted to create our own shortcut.
That’s never a good idea.
Patiently waiting on God to give us the steps and clarity we need or to provide us with the answers we’re so desperate for is always best.
His timing is perfect and He always keeps His word.
“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14 NTL)
Until next time, Grace and Glory!
Amen. 💜😊🩵🤗
