There is something deep inside of us that is drawn to nature. The vast expanse of the sky by day; the never-ending canopy of stars by night. The trees, birds, flowers – all of it calls to something deep within us.

Something that longs to slow down; to be unhurried; to cast off the shackles of all things time and schedule and just be.

We belong here, sitting next to the tranquil water surrounded by beautiful trees. It’s here that we’re reminded of our place in God’s incredible creation.

We are its crown jewel (Psalm 8). He made the expanse, the trees, the fish, and the animals. Then, He made us. Our hearts know this. Our souls breathe deeply.

This is why every fiber of our being relaxes while we sit here. We belong. Our souls are at home here – free of any human fabrications or manmade distractions.

We can simply be still, surrounded by a multitude of other living things, and commune with the Master Creator.

As the waves lap against the shore, we are able to hear God a little better. As the sun gets higher in the sky, we see God a little more clearly.

We don’t have to utter a word.

He sees us. He knows us. He meets us here.

He calms our mind; restores our heart; and reminds our soul of His ever-present love.

There is no struggle He cannot help us with; no worry He cannot take; no pain He cannot ease.

Creation reminds us of this as we sit and just be. We see His handiwork all around and are assured He is more than able.

All of creation agrees and rejoices (Psalm 148).

There is something deep inside of us that is drawn to nature. We understand it because we are part of it.

Lean in and listen. Just be.

He is God. We are not.

He is God. All is well.

“God comes like the sun in the morning – when it is time. We must assume an attitude of waiting, accepting the fact that we are creatures not creator…the initiative is God’s, not ours.” (Carlo Carretto, The God Who Comes)

Until next time, Grace and Glory!

  1. Hi Kristen. I completely agree! I sit inside with my grandbaby several afternoons per week. We talk and play and sing, and sometimes get loud. But when we go outside, she looks up at me and smiles. We sit down on the porch and rarely utter a word. We listen to the birds and feel the wind across our faces. How peaceful! Love you friend! Tami
