When my children were small, one of our all-time favorite book series that we read out loud together was John Bibee’s “Spirit Flyer” novels.  This allegorical adventure series kept my children on the edge of their seats as they wondered what would become of its characters who found themselves in a constant battle of good versus evil.

As the chapters (and the adventures) unfold, the young characters learned how to use some extraordinary gifts that helped them navigate that continual conflict they were in.

One of these gifts was called the Spirit Flyer vision goggles.  When a character put these on, they could immediately see into the realm of the supernatural.  Angelic beings carrying out mission objectives for the good side suddenly came into view.  Likewise, the character could also see the dark, demonic beings of the bad side as they schemed and worked to derail all things good.

It’s been years since I read those books to my children, but hardly a day goes by that I don’t think about the vision goggles and what I’d see if I put a pair on myself.

The Bible makes it abundantly clear that we’re engaged in a war, a fight, a conflict.  While we ultimately know the victorious ending of the story, it doesn’t negate the fact that every day is a battle of some kind.  And, the Scriptures tell us the precise intentions of our enemy.

Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.” (I Peter 5:8)

That’s not just poetic prose.  God is painting a clear picture of our enemy – he is stalking us; his intentions are malicious; his aim is to destroy.  It is critical for us to put on our spiritual vision and learn how to fight effectively.

God instructs us to, “resist [the devil], firm in the faith.” (vs. 9). The only way to effectively do this is to strap on the armor of God (check out Ephesians 6: 11-17 for a complete list); dig into His Word and find verses that apply to our current circumstances (our personal battles); and use those Scriptures in prayer.

If you do this by faith, you will be resisting your adversary; overcoming evil with good; moving mountains; and making pathways for the God of the impossible to supernaturally work!

Be encouraged, friend, “…although we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh, since the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds!” (2 Cor. 10: 3 & 4)

Time to put on those spiritual vision goggles and go to battle!

Until next time, Grace and Glory!
